Introducing Domni

Transformation always requires that you take on a challenge: there’s no scope for growth in your comfort zone. At Obeetee, we cultivate mastery with every endeavour, but we make sure we always push ourselves to explore new avenues, to do better, and to surprise ourselves with our growth. These transformative experiences often come from collaborations with prolific designers, and Tissage, known predominantly for their contemporary design narratives, always push the envelope with their approach to carpet design. 

In 2024, we had the privilege of launching a collection in collaboration with Tissage early in November. Hosted at the prestigious Design Mumbai event, the first people to see our collection included an audience of home decor aficionados comprised of architects and interior designers. The collection, Domni, is a marriage of Tissage’s ability to breathe life into abstract design, and Obeetee’s heritage of exquisite craftsmanship. At first glance, the carpets in the collection look like long-lost relatives, somewhat similar in colour, yet vastly differing in shape and design, but Tissage’s story ties them together.

The beauty of this collection stems from its novel design concept. Domni pays homage to the power of expression through dance and uses the notion of movement as a vessel through which to explore the emotional landscape of a woman’s journey. Visual art depicts the highs and lows of this journey through a feminine lens, embedded in the form of a carpet through careful handcrafting. Just as a lifetime of experiences unfolds, each tapestry represents a phase of emotional transition in a woman’s life. To depict these phases the story of Domni is told in four acts.

Act 1: Bloom

As she woke, the veil of idealism took shape and her exploration began–her eyes glistening with wonder, and curiosity in every step. 

Act 2: Whirlwind

In the midst of her elated rhythm, the glee turns to fear as she is caught in the strings of her expectations. 

Act 3: Inferno

Shrouded in expectation and convention, she found her rebellion–embracing outrage and donning it as a badge of honour. 

Act 4: Serenity

In the aftermath of the turmoil, she is overcome with clarity–moments of acceptance, expression and a romance of self.

Each piece in the collection offers a unique perspective on the inner workings of a woman’s emotional journey. Through two starkly contrasting designs from the collection, here’s an exclusive glimpse into the world of Domni: 

Lay Hand-Knotted Woollen and Silk Rug

Brushed lines converge to create the physical form of a dancer at the heart of the Lay Hand-Knotted rug, aptly named using the word for rhythm in Hindi. Caught in a whirlwind of movement, the body in motion is difficult to pin down, yet beautiful to observe. A simple design on a square, limestone canvas, the evocative power of the artwork is a testament to Tissage’s design prowess and Obeetee’s mastery of craft. 

Sphira Hand-Knotted Woollen and Silk Rug

The Sphira Hand-Knotted rug is a masterpiece of modern design. An unconventional shape unwinds from the heart of the spiral pattern, forming the oval contours of a conch shell. The curves and lines of the shell design are complemented by the carpet's rugged corners, signifying that a journey within can change the landscape of the world you live in. An avant-garde design, this carpet demonstrates the power of playing with form and function to create a story in home decor. 

While some pieces from Domni stick to classic carpet design features, others take on the challenge of contemporary design to weave new stories.
