2024 in Review: Obeetee's Most Iconic Carpet Collections of the Year

Another year has flown past, and we’ve hardly had a chance to step back and take stock of all that we’ve managed to achieve in the last twelve months. The days fly by, and yet over weeks and months, discussions turn into designs and our designs materialize into carpets that form collections to cherish for a lifetime. Some of our proudest moments from 2024 have been our collaborative launches — carpet collections that celebrate our expertise in handcrafting traditional and contemporary carpets and the art and design ingenuity of talented creators from different corners of the industry. 

As we bid adieu to 2024, we want to take this opportunity to spotlight some of our prized collaborations from the year - consider it a year in review for our most iconic carpet collections. Not only do these collections represent our best work of the year, but they also represent our quest for novelty, our eclectic collaborators allowing us to push the boundaries of carpet design and challenging us to re-invent the role of the humble carpet. Without further ado, here are our top 4 carpet collections of 2024. 

1.     Chroma by Tissage

We started 2024 on a high note, launching Chroma People by Tissage in the first few weeks of January. A deep exploration of the link between our emotions and how we perceive colour, each piece in this collection dives into the narratives hidden within the hues of a single shade. This designer collection draws on Tissage's contemporary design styles to create a blend of fine artistry within Obeetee’s exquisite handcraft. A colourful, playful collection, Chroma People set the tone for the rest of 2024.

2.     A Stitch in Time by Abraham & Thakore

May 2024 marked the launch of an iconic collaboration with textile maestros and talented fashion designers Abraham & Thakore: A Stitch in Time. A timeless collection of cushion covers and carpets, this collaboration celebrated the traditional Kantha stitch from West India. While traditional textile notes of a Kantha stitch, a vertical running stitch across sturdy fabric, conventionally work best with cushion covers, this design concept proved extraordinary when applied to carpets. The visual impact of the Kantha stitch created symmetry and beauty in lines and gaps, creating art in the features of the carpet. 

3.     Viraasat

Autumn 2024 at Obeetee was all about Viraasat - our groundbreaking collaboration with leading Indian designers Tarun Tahiliani, Anju Modi, Ashdeen Z. Lilaowala, and Anita Dalmia. Challenging the medium of the carpet as a vessel for art, this collection was all about exploring cultural inheritance, a foray into the preservation of legacies we call our own. Stunning artwork and heirloom designs marked this collection, with each designer bringing their creativity to the canvas of the carpet. A festival of gorgeous design, Viraasat’s genre-bending carpets have raised the bar for coming years. 

4.     Domni by Tissage

The launch of Domni by Tissage in November was a special moment, as the one-of-a-kind collection explored facets of a woman’s self-expression through the medium of dance in contemporary carpet design. Launched at Design Mumbai, this collection is a masterful display of Tissage’s avant-garde design, paying homage to a traditional dance form from West Bengal, while evoking passing stages of emotional turmoil, as viewed from a feminine lens. A salute to fine craftsmanship, the creative designs of this collection are complemented by Obeetee’s brilliant workmanship, as Tissage’s stories come to life with the threads woven into this canvas. 

These four collections are just a few of our highlights of 2024. Each collaboration marks a moment of growth, as we push the boundaries of classic carpet design to express ideas that deserve to be displayed front and centre. From a humble piece of floor furnishing to a medium of artistic expression, we are always looking to create carpets and rugs that can serve as heirlooms for generations to come.
