Abraham & Thakore x OBEETEE: Proud to be Indian

At Obeetee, we look to collaborate with designers from all corners of the art and design world because we believe in the power of innovating in art through the medium of home decor. From the world of fashion, our long-time collaborators, Abraham & Thakore, have worked consistently with us to explore new mediums of artistic expression and push the boundaries of design. 

With their expertise at integrating traditional textiles into contemporary design narratives, our previous collaborations with Abraham &Thakore have featured collections of home furnishing centred around the Kantha stitch from East India, called ‘A Stitch in Time’. This month, Obeetee is delighted to unveil our newest collection in collaboration with Abraham &Thakore - Proud to be Indian. A celebration of India’s rich textile heritage, this collection marries Obeetee’s expertise in handcrafting textiles for carpets and rugs with Abraham & Thakore’s passion for showcasing India’s rich clothing design heritage. Drawing on Abraham & Thakore’s design ingenuity, this collection sources inspiration from traditional Indian motifs including Bandhni, Ikat, Kantha, and Gamchha textiles, as well as the delicate strokes of calligraphy ink. From the block printed textiles of garment fabric - Bandhni and Ikat draw inspiration from the quintessential saree, while Gamchha’s are scarves typically worn by men - to the nostalgia of handwritten letters formed on parchment paper, this collection is an ode to the beauty in the quotidian and a culture we should all be proud to inherit.

This collection will be unveiled at a pop-up showcase at Delhi’s Defence Colony on the 19th of December, 2024. With a specially curated selection from the ‘Proud to be Indian’ collections, this exclusive event is a homage to Obeetee and Abraham & Thakore’s longstanding collaborative relationship. For the very first time, join us to witness the first glimpses of the Proud to be Indian collection with a display of hand-knotted rugs championing Indian textiles. Attendees will also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich tradition of Indian textile heritage with our displays of vibrant hand-tufted rugs from the Proud to Be Indian Pret collection.

As the event is hosted at Abraham & Thakore’s store in Defence Colony, we would be remiss to not mention that you will be treated to more than just a display of exquisitely crafted carpets! This event will cement the fusion of Abraham &Thakore and Obeetee’s design narratives with the unveiling of Abraham &Thakore’s newest clothing collection. Also inspired by the very same Indian textiles - Bandhni, Ikat, Kantha, and Gamchha - and calligraphy, Abraham &Thakore’s bespoke pieces will be displayed alongside carpets from their collaboration with Obeetee. With both collections on display, unveiled together for the very first time, this is a unique event for the worlds of fashion design and home decor. 

The pop-up at Defence Colony will not just be a display of fine craftsmanship - it promises to be an experience to remember. Guests can look forward to learning about the stories and inspirations behind each design - carpet or clothing, as well as the opportunity to connect with the creators themselves. With the worlds of Abraham & Thakore and Obeetee colliding, aficionados, appreciators, and well-wishers from the worlds of fashion and home decor will mingle - creating the opportunity to push ideas beyond the boundaries of the home and clothing design worlds.
