Design Milestone Exhibition

2024 has flown by, and as the team at Obeetee reflects on our achievements, we’re overcome with gratitude and joy for all that we’ve accomplished. From new beginnings with brand-new retail locations to launching new collections with prolific collaborators, somehow we’ve managed to fit it all into a single calendar year! Luckily for us, before the last month of this year came to a close, we had an amazing opportunity to contribute to a very special occasion.

How often do you get to say that you’ve been a part of something new for the very first time? From the 13th-15th of December, Obeetee had the privilege of being invited to Design Milestone in Kolkata, East India’s first premier luxury design show. As the first event of its kind, Design Milestone was a celebration of the talent, creativity, and inspiration flowing through the design world. Providing a bridge between different parts of the country, the event brought members of the design fraternity from all over India to Kolkata, the heart of East India. 

Also known as the city of joy, Kolkata has a reputation for fine artistry, handicrafts, and brilliant design across the country. This was the perfect event to celebrate the city’s long-standing history of rich cultural heritage and artistic inspiration. A perennial fountain of inspiration, and a hub for creatives from all corners of the industry, the design fraternity was overjoyed to be able to give back to this city through their attendance at the event. A celebration of modern Indian design, design houses from across the country showcased their fine work, engaged in conversations with peers, and immersed in the local food and culture. 

As Kolkata leapt into the world of premier luxury design with Design Milestone, the team at Obeetee was determined to do more than just exhibit our carpets. We chose to curate an experience like no other for our colleagues in the world of design. From the 13th-15th of December, Obeetee brought together two distinct collections from our range of carpets, to create a visual story about the beauty in contrast. Walking the fine lines of contrast, we displayed pieces from Viraasat, our collaboration with leading Indian designers exploring traditional techniques in art and textiles and the role of artistic inspiration in carpet design, and from Domni, a contemporary exploration, designed in collaboration with Tissage, of a woman’s self-expression through dance. 

This world of contrast made our exhibit at Design Milestone exceptionally powerful, as we encouraged our guests to walk through the facets of humanity that make up our creative expression. While there was a contrast in our designs - Viraasat tends to explore traditional motifs and narratives, while the contemporary Domni collection is rooted entirely in the abstraction of artistic ideas - our carpets were united in their display of craftsmanship and technical mastery. Bringing two creative forces together - artists from the worlds of fashion, textile, and home design, and the wild expressions of a traditional dance form - to the medium of the carpet is a herculean task, but we love pushing the boundaries of expression through our collaborations. 

Viraasat, designed in collaboration with designers Tarun Tahiliani, Anju Modi, Anita Dalmia and Ashdeen Z. Lilaowala invited them to take a deep dive into their cultural heritage and explore new avenues of inspiration in their designs. Domni draws on Tissage’s avant-garde design narratives to explore a journey in 4 acts through a feminine lens, navigating societal pressures, emotional turmoil, and rebellion:

Act 1: Bloom

As she woke, the veil of idealism took shape and her exploration began–her eyes glistening with wonder, and curiosity in every step.

Act 2: Whirlwind

In the midst of her elated rhythm, the glee turns to fear as she is caught in the strings of her expectations.

Act 3: Inferno

Shrouded in expectation and convention, she found her rebellion–embracing outrage and donning it as a badge of honour.

Act 4: Serenity

In the aftermath of turmoil, she is overcome with clarity–moments of acceptance, expression and a romance of self.
