3 ways to style a throw

In India, seasons change quite dramatically over the year. Most of our readers will be quite used to the quarterly process of re-assessing how well the decor suits the needs of a household each season — that perfect spot in the living room where the cross-breeze hits just right during the summer suddenly transforms into a vortex of bone-chilling wind in a matter of weeks, leaving you with a practically unusable piece of furniture. The fun of this stark shift, however, is that you get to re-plan your spaces every few months, creating the perfect situation for home decor aficionados!

3 ways to style a throw

We’ve spent a lot of time in our publications talking about how our range of home furnishing - from carpets to cushion covers - and furniture are tailored to fit your re-vamping needs. Today, we want to shift gears to talk about a new collection, as introduced in previous blogs: throws. Somewhere between a blanket and a shawl in terms of size, throws are both decorative and functional. A small section of cloth crafted to fit perfectly over your legs or shoulders (but only one or the other!), throws are a thought-out afterthought, something to grab when you need just a touch of cosiness. When they’re not in use, throws are often left where they were used, rather than tucked away like blankets tend to be, making the throw a great piece of decor through which to infuse a pop of colour or a splash of texture.

We spoke to our experts to find 3 easy ways for beginners to style their throws to share with you today. These may seem like no-brainers, but an intentional throw placement can elevate your decor statement within seconds. Without further ado, here are our top tips for styling your throws:

1.    The Fold

A throw is essentially a section of cloth, so how you fold it impacts not only the ease of access for when you need to cover yourself, but also the visual impression it makes when not in use. A simple square fold, achieved by matching the corners and following the length of the fabric, is simple but can fall flat visually. Create depth in the fabric by gathering it in loose pleats, or, if you prefer more secure storage, fold it into an unconventional shape, like a triangle. The key is to recognize the power of this tiny cover to bring a refined sense of ‘lived-in’-ness to your home.

2.    Draping

Draping is key when it comes to beautiful styling for throws. Once you find a fold that works for your throw, you need to find a place to store it, but just plopping it on top of a surface is - dare we say - not very interesting. This is where draping comes in, all you need to do is take the folded throw and let it tumble over the edge of a piece of furniture. This is an effortless look, but doing it with a sense of purpose adds a touch of elegance to your space while drawing notes of contrast and cohesion with the rest of your decor.

3.    Patterns and Textures

Colours, patterns, and textures provide an unbridled canvas to play with when it comes to throws. You can find pieces in similar or different fabrics to your furniture, creating contrast or cohesion depending on your mood. Our Nestwoven Throw Blanket, for instance, has a multi-coloured, loosely checkered design, making it easy to mix into a transitional or modern decor narrative.

Throws are best used in spaces designed for relaxation - warm snuggles, naps, and cosy moments spent together. In living rooms, we often find that throws such as our Hearth Woven Throw Blanket get the most use when draped over a sofa. In bedrooms, throws can be a great addition at the foot of the bed to warm your feet and are equally stylish when effortlessly draped over the edge of a chair or a stool.
